Reproductive Health Programmes in Urban Slums
.............................................
There is growing internal migration
of rural
population to urban areas for socio-economic
reasons. Emergence of urban slums becomes a
public health concern with negative RH impact.
To improve comprehensive RH in urban areas, ICOMP implemented an
innovative urban slum RH project funded by UNFPA in 1998-2001. The
four collaborating NGOs were The National Council of Churches of
Kenya (NCCK) in Kenya, the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Uganda, Society
for Development through Integrated Approaches
(SDIA) in Pakistan, and Swaasthya in India.
The project strategy was to strengthen experience base by assisting
these NGOs to
expand their activities in urban slum areas to meet critical RH
needs.
Seed money and technical assistance were provided to institutionalise
the four partner NGOs for development and implementation of pilot
activities.
