Health and Family Welfare Programme

The Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO) Limited in Jamshedpur, India launched its health and family welfare programme in the early fifties.  Starting initially within the Steel City of Jamshedpur, this programme now covers a population of over 150,000 around the Steel City and around 600,000 in Jamshedpur.  Besides health and family welfare services, other development issues are also addressed by the company's urban and rural development programmes.  Box 1 gives a summary of the wide variety of services rendered.

As a result of TISCO's efforts and that of other agencies, Jamshedpur has already achieved demographic indices targetted for the country by the year 2000. (see Box 2).
