Reproductive Health Education for Women Workers

The Mauritius Family Planning Association (MFPA)

Objective

To promote healthy reproductive sexual behavior and practices among young women workers in industries through education on sexual and reproductive health in the working place

Scope
The MFPA began its project with a research study to find out the situation and the needs of young women workers. It experimented the project in two factories. Given the success of the pilot project, MFPA has expanded its activities since May 1996, reaching out to 15,000 young in 24 factories.

Background
MFPA pioneered the family planning movement since 1957 and has been institutional in moderating the country's population growth. Having achieved the demographic goal on one side and confronted with emerging needs as a result of a fast industrialization on the other, MFPA redirected its strategies in 1996 to meeting the unmet reproductive health needs of young factory workers.

Main Activities
Peer education at work place, at youth clubs and at community centres; education for parents; condom distribution; and development and dissemination of IEC materials.

Evaluation Findings.
The success of the Peer Education programs is seen in the Association's expanded program to other factories and is able to reach many more working young women.

Increase awareness and their sexual and reproductive health needs and rights, more condoms are sought and industries have placed condom vending machines at work place.

Management Features
Strategy
MFPA created a core group of peer educators who will in turn share the knowledge they have with their peers in the factories.

Building Support
Support was obtained from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Labour and Industrial Relations. Advocacy with factory managers was conducted and parents were sensitized. The factory managers were involved in the selection of peer counselors who were then given training to enable them to educate their peers.

Mobilizing resources:
WHO and UNICEF funded the six month pilot project while the European Commission provided the financial resources in another 24 factories as an expanded program of MFPA for three years.

Managerial Leadership
To create a common vision, it works with managers of the factories as well as government ministries and education institutions. Work, family and peer interact to influence youth sexual and reproductive behavior. MFPA, while it organized meetings with factory managers to sensitize and involve them, its activities also reached out to parents and other members of the community.
