The Population Council is an international, non-profit institution that conducts research on three fronts: bio-medical research and products, population development and social policy, and reproductive health and family planning. The Council has five regional offices, 19 country offices, and works in over 50 countries. Information regarding the Council's work in each region or country is available from the website.

Based on the three research areas, information that is obtainable from this website include:

  1. Biomedical research and products:Center for Biomedical Research (CBR), reproductive physiology research, female and male contraceptive development, microbicides, reproductive product development, products on the market, and the International Committee for contraceptive development,
  2. Population development and social policyAdolescent, child health and survival, diffusion, family dynamics, fertility transition, men's roles, policy options, population aging, population and poverty, schooling, unmet needs, urban growth and work opportunities
  3. Reproductive health and family planningAbortion, community-based distribution of contraception, Ebert programme on critical issues in RH, emergency contraception, expanding contraceptive choice, experimental programmes, frontiers in RH, HIV/AIDS/STIs, Horizons- Global operations research on HIV/AIDS/STI Prevention and care, impact studies, quality of services, safe motherhood and post-partum care, situation analysis, violence against women/female genital cutting.

The publications index contains hundreds of Council publications and articles by Council staff since 1990. Population And Development Review, Studies In Family Planning** and Policy Research Division (PRD) Working Papers go back even earlier. Some of the publications are on-line in HTML format, while others can be downloaded in the PDF format. Other publications are abstracts or first chapters on-line which are available in French, Spanish, and Arabic.

** Subscribers can log in to our on-line section to view and download the current issue of Studies in Family Planning. Studies in Family Planning is a peer-reviewed international quarterly concerned with all aspects of reproductive health, fertility regulation, and family planning programmes in both developing and developed countries. Each issue contains original research articles, reports, a commentary, book reviews, and a data section with findings for individual countries from the Demographic and Health Surveys.
