Email: info@safemotherhood.org The Safe Motherhood Initiative is a global effort that aims to reduce deaths and illnesses among women and infants, especially in developing countries. Partners in the Initiative support and implement safe motherhood interventions, in the context of broader reproductive health programmes. This site describes the Safe Motherhood initiatives and projects undertaken by member organisations of the Inter-Agency Group for Safe Motherhood, lists upcoming events, and posts relevant news articles published by journalists. Some publications can be ordered by email. There are fact sheets, statistics and graphs related to safe motherhood. For example, there are 'country by country' statistics showing the lifetime risks of maternal death, the percentage of women who have a skilled attendant (midwife, nurse of doctor) during their deliveries, as well as the numbers of peri-natal deaths (i.e. infants who are stillborn or die in the first week of life). There are also case studies that describe the vital partnerships among some national and international agencies (WHO, UNICEF, Population Council, World Bank, IPPF and UNFPA) that collaborated on safe motherhood programmes. This is a multi-lingual website (English, Spanish and French). |
