Regional Workshop on Repositioning Family Planning in High and Medium Fertility Countries in Asia and the Pacific Region (28-29 November 2011)

Regional Workshop on Repositioning Family Planning in High and Medium Fertility Countries in Asia and the Pacific Region (28-29 November 2011)

The Regional Workshop
As a follow up to the Asia Pacific Regional Consultation on Family Planning held in Bangkok, in December 2010, follow up workshops focusing on specific themes were identified. The proposed workshop on re-positioning family planning in high and medium fertility countries is one of them. The workshop is being held jointly by UNFPA APRO and ICOMP on 28-29 November 2011 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Main objective:
The main purpose of this workshop is to follow up on the implementation of the Call for Elimination of the Unmet Need for Family Planning in selected countries of the AP region and advocate to the Governments and civil societies of the region the need to attach higher priority to Family Planning programmes and increase investments in FP in order to achieve the MDGs, and especially, universal access to Reproductive Health.

Specifically:
1. To review and synthesize the current levels and trends of fertility decline and factors underpinning the unmet need for family planning, such as age at marriage, adolescents SRH needs and rights etc in selected countries with high and medium fertility levels
2. To assess and evaluate available policies and programme options for addressing the unmet need for FP, and
3. To recommend strategic actions to reposition family planning with rights-based approach in high and medium fertility countries in the Asia and the Pacific regions.
